What Georgism Stands For

Georgism comes from the American economist Henry George, whose book Progress and Poverty (1879) asked why poverty deepened as cities grew rich. His answer was that landowners capture rising land values created by the whole community. George proposed a single tax on the unimproved value of land, replacing taxes on wages, trade and buildings. The idea inspired land value taxes in places such as Denmark, parts of Australia and some Pennsylvania cities, and influenced figures like Leo Tolstoy and Sun Yat-sen. Georgists are usually strong free traders. Compared with Classical Liberalism, Georgism treats land rent as common wealth and wants it shared. Compared with Social Democracy, it relies on markets and one simple tax instead of broad state planning.

Answers That Lead to Georgism

  • You score very high on Globalist: like Henry George, you see tariffs as a tax on consumers and want free trade.
  • You lean Laissez-faire on Planned and Laissez-faire but toward Equality on Equality and Markets: you want free markets for labor and capital while treating land value as common wealth.
  • You lean Democratic and Freedom: you favor a modest, accountable state funded by land rent rather than by taxes on work and enterprise.
