What Anarcho-Communism Stands For
Anarcho-communism grew out of the anarchist wing of the First International in the 1870s and got its classic form from Peter Kropotkin, whose books The Conquest of Bread and Mutual Aid argued that cooperation, not competition, drives human survival. Errico Malatesta and Emma Goldman spread it through Italy and the Americas, and it was put into practice in parts of revolutionary Catalonia and Aragon in 1936. It rejects both the state and money: communes federate freely from the bottom up and share their output without wages. Unlike Marxism and Leninism, it refuses any transitional workers' state. Unlike anarcho-syndicalism, it treats unions as one tool among many, and unlike mutualism it abolishes markets entirely.
