What Libertarian Socialism Stands For
The term covers a wide current that runs from William Morris and the guild socialists to council communists such as Anton Pannekoek, the Socialisme ou Barbarie group, and later thinkers like Noam Chomsky and Murray Bookchin. Its common thread is that workers and communities should manage their own affairs directly, through councils, cooperatives and assemblies, rather than through bosses or party bureaucracies. It accepts more pluralism than strict anarchism: some versions tolerate a limited, democratic public authority, local markets or elected councils. Compared with anarcho-communism it is less absolute about abolishing every institution at once. Compared with democratic socialism it puts less trust in parliaments and the national state, and prefers self-management from below.
