What Centrism Stands For
Centrism is less a doctrine than a habit of seeking the middle ground. Centrists judge issues one at a time, borrowing market policies from the right and social programs from the left when they seem to work. The idea has older roots in Aristotle's praise of the mean, and in modern politics it shows up in movements such as the Third Way of the 1990s (Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Gerhard Schröder) and in centrist parties across Europe and Latin America. Centrists value stable institutions, pragmatic coalitions and avoiding sharp breaks. Compared with Liberalism, centrism has no strong commitment to social progress; compared with Moderate Conservatism, it has no strong commitment to tradition. A result near the middle on all twelve axes means you have no dominant pull in any direction.
