What Conservatism Stands For
Conservatism as a political tradition took shape in reaction to the French Revolution, especially in Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). Burke argued that inherited institutions carry accumulated wisdom and should be changed slowly. Later conservatism joined that caution to religion, patriotism and, in the 20th century, free-market economics, as in the fusionism of William F. Buckley in the United States and the governments of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. Conservatives value the family, faith communities, the nation and the rule of law. Compared with Moderate Conservatism, it is more religious, more nationalist and firmer on social questions. Compared with Paleoconservatism, it is more open to free trade, alliances and military engagement abroad.
