What Marxism Stands For
Marx and Engels set out their ideas in The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Capital (1867). They argued that the way a society produces its goods shapes its laws, culture and politics, a view called historical materialism. Under capitalism, they held, workers create value that owners keep as profit, and recurring crises would push the working class to take power, abolish private ownership of production and eventually let the state wither away. Marxism is a method and a tradition more than a single program: it gave rise to social democracy, Leninism, Trotskyism, Western Marxism and many academic schools. Compared with Leninism it leaves open how the revolution is organized, and compared with anarchism it accepts a transitional workers' state before statelessness.
