What De Leonism Stands For
Daniel De Leon, a Curaçao-born lecturer who led the Socialist Labor Party of America from the 1890s until his death in 1914, argued that workers need two arms: a political party to win elections and dismantle the capitalist state, and socialist industrial unions, organized by whole industries, to take over and manage production. Once in power, the unions would replace geographic government with an industrial administration, with delegates elected from each workplace up to a national congress. He also helped found the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905. De Leonism differs from Leninism by rejecting a vanguard party and armed insurrection, from anarcho-syndicalism by insisting on the ballot, and from democratic socialism by refusing gradual reforms within capitalism.
