What Anarcho-Capitalism Stands For
Anarcho-capitalism was developed mainly by Murray Rothbard in the 1960s and 1970s, drawing on the Austrian School of economics, 19th century individualist anarchists and the natural rights tradition. Rothbard's For a New Liberty (1973) and The Ethics of Liberty set out the core idea: the nonaggression principle and self-ownership rule out taxation and the state. David Friedman's The Machinery of Freedom (1973) defended the same goal on economic rather than moral grounds, and Hans-Hermann Hoppe later added a critique of democracy. Under anarcho-capitalism, private defense agencies and arbitration firms would replace police and courts. Compared with Right-Libertarianism, it keeps no minimal state. Compared with Voluntaryism, it is a wider economic program rather than mainly a method of nonviolent withdrawal.
