What Voluntaryism Stands For

Voluntaryism goes back to 19th century writers such as Auberon Herbert, who coined the term, and to the anti-state individualists around Benjamin Tucker and Lysander Spooner, whose No Treason (1867) denied that the Constitution binds anyone who did not consent to it. Modern voluntaryists, such as Carl Watner and The Voluntaryist newsletter, argue that taxation and law backed by force are illegitimate, that voting legitimizes coercion, and that society should rest on contracts, charity and free association. They reject violent revolution too. Compared with Anarcho-Capitalism, voluntaryism puts more weight on method: nonviolence, nonvoting and personal example rather than political strategy. Compared with Right-Libertarianism, it accepts no state at all.

Answers That Lead to Voluntaryism

  • You score at the end of Federal and Freedom: you want no state at all, only voluntary associations and contracts.
  • You score at the extreme of Pacifist: you reject war, conscription and violent revolution, preferring persuasion and peaceful noncooperation.
  • You lean Autocratic rather than Democratic on the test: you do not accept that a majority vote can bind people who did not consent.
