What Carlism Stands For

Carlism began in 1833, when supporters of Infante Carlos María Isidro refused to accept his niece Isabel II as queen and rose against the liberal government. Three Carlist Wars followed, centered on Navarre and the Basque Country. Its motto, Dios, Patria, Fueros, Rey, sums up the program: Catholic unity, loyalty to Spain, the historic fueros or local charters, and a legitimate king bound by them. Carlist militias, the requetés, fought on Franco's side in 1936, and the movement was forced into the single party in 1937. In the 1970s Carlos Hugo de Borbón-Parma led one branch toward self-managing socialism. Compared with Falangism, Carlism is decentralist and monarchist. Compared with monarchism in general, it ties the crown to Catholic faith and regional rights.
