What Theocracy Stands For
In a theocracy, legitimacy comes from divine authority, and law follows sacred texts as interpreted by religious leaders. Historical and current examples include the Papal States, Calvin's Geneva, Tibet under the Dalai Lamas, the Islamic Republic of Iran since 1979, with its Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist, and the Taliban's Afghanistan. Theocracies differ in how much they allow elections or markets, but they share the subordination of public life to religion. Human rights groups have documented restrictions on religious minorities, women's rights, free speech and dissent in modern theocracies. Compared with Monarchism, power rests with religious authority rather than a dynasty. Compared with Reactionarism, its aim is not restoring a past order in general but applying a specific religious law.
