What Reactionarism Stands For

Reactionary thought began as a response to the French Revolution and the Enlightenment. Joseph de Maistre and Louis de Bonald defended throne, altar and social hierarchy against popular sovereignty and secular reason, and later figures such as Juan Donoso Cortés, Charles Maurras and the 20th century traditionalists carried the outlook forward. In recent decades the label has been revived by online 'neoreactionary' writers such as Curtis Yarvin. Reactionaries do not only want to slow change, as conservatives do; they want to undo it, restoring an order they see as natural or sacred. Compared with Conservatism, it rejects democracy itself. Compared with Monarchism, it is broader, not tied to a crown. Compared with Fascism, it looks back to pre-modern hierarchy rather than to a mass movement.
