What Democratic Socialism Stands For
Its roots lie in the British Fabians, the early Labour Party, Eduard Bernstein's debates within German socialism and Eugene Debs's Socialist Party of America. Democratic socialists hold that democracy must extend from politics into the economy: key sectors should be publicly owned or run by workers, with strong unions and universal public services, while elections and free speech are kept. In recent decades the label has been used by figures such as Bernie Sanders and by groups like the Democratic Socialists of America. The difference from social democracy is the end goal: social democrats reform and regulate capitalism, while democratic socialists want to move beyond it. Unlike Leninism and Trotskyism, it rejects a vanguard party, and unlike anarchism it works through the existing state.
