What Maoism Stands For
Mao Zedong led the Chinese Communist Party to victory in 1949 after two decades of rural guerrilla war. He argued that in agrarian, colonized countries the peasants, not only factory workers, are the main revolutionary force, and that power is won by surrounding the cities from the countryside. In government he stressed the mass line (gathering ideas from the people and returning them as policy), self-reliance, and the idea that class struggle continues under socialism, which led to the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. Maoist movements later appeared in Peru, Nepal, India and the Philippines. Compared with Stalinism, Maoism puts more weight on rural life and on campaigns against old customs. Compared with Leninism, it is more focused on armed struggle and national self-reliance.
