What Stalinism Stands For

After Lenin died in 1924, Joseph Stalin defeated his rivals and declared that the Soviet Union could build socialism on its own without waiting for revolutions abroad. From 1928 his five-year plans turned the country into an industrial power, while farms were forced into collectives, causing famine in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other regions. Political life centered on Stalin personally, and the secret police carried out mass arrests, show trials and deportations to the Gulag labor camps, most intensely in the Great Purge of 1936 to 1938. Socially the regime grew more conservative over time, restoring traditional family policy and promoting Russian culture. Stalinism keeps the Leninist party state but is more centralized, more nationalist and more coercive, and unlike Maoism it relied on the urban working class and heavy industry.

Answers That Lead to Stalinism

  • You score far toward Unitary and Autocratic: you trust a single central authority and leader more than local bodies or elections.
  • You lean Nationalist and score high on Assimilationist: you see socialism as something one nation builds for itself, around a shared national culture.
