What Progressivism Stands For

The term first described the American Progressive Era of roughly 1890 to 1920, when reformers such as Theodore Roosevelt, Jane Addams and Robert La Follette fought corruption, child labor and monopolies, and women won the vote. In later decades progressivism came to center on civil rights, feminism, LGBT rights, environmental protection and criminal justice reform, and today the label is used across the Americas and Europe. Progressives see society as improvable and tradition as open to revision when it causes harm. Their focus is social and cultural change more than a fixed economic system, which distinguishes them from democratic socialism. Compared with social liberalism they are more willing to challenge established customs and institutions, and compared with social democracy they put less emphasis on the labor movement.
