What Religious Anarchism Stands For
The best-known form is Christian anarchism, which reads the Sermon on the Mount, with its commands to turn the other cheek and love one's enemies, as incompatible with armies, courts and governments. Leo Tolstoy gave it its classic statement in The Kingdom of God Is Within You (1894), a book that later influenced Gandhi. Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin's Catholic Worker movement put it into practice with houses of hospitality, and thinkers such as Jacques Ellul extended it. Similar currents exist in Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Taoist traditions. Unlike most anarchists, religious anarchists ground their views in faith rather than secular reason and are often strictly pacifist. They share the anarcho-communist ideal of common property but seek it through personal conversion and example, not revolution.
