What State Capitalism Stands For
In state capitalism, markets and profits exist, but the government owns large firms, controls banks and sets industrial strategy. The term has been applied to the Soviet Union by some Marxist critics, and today most often to China after Deng Xiaoping's reforms, where state-owned enterprises dominate key sectors, to Vietnam, Russia and the Gulf states with national oil companies. Supporters credit the model with fast industrialization and infrastructure; critics note limited political freedom, surveillance and corruption. Compared with Authoritarian Capitalism, the state is an owner and planner rather than just a protector of private business. Compared with Leninism, it accepts profit, private firms and foreign investment instead of seeking full collective ownership.
