What Social Libertarianism Stands For

Social libertarianism, sometimes called civil libertarianism or left libertarianism in a broad sense, focuses on freeing individuals from state and social control in their private lives: drug policy reform, privacy, free speech, sexual freedom, open borders and opposition to mass surveillance and militarism. It draws on John Stuart Mill's harm principle and on later civil liberties movements, digital rights groups and Pirate Parties in Europe. Economically it is mixed: it accepts markets but supports some redistribution and public goods. Compared with Right-Libertarianism, it cares more about inequality and less about cutting taxes. Compared with Liberalism, it is more suspicious of police, the military and central power. Compared with anarchism, it still accepts a democratic state.
