What Paleoconservatism Stands For
Paleoconservatism emerged in the United States in the 1980s as a reaction against the rise of Neoconservatism within the Republican coalition. Writers such as Pat Buchanan, Samuel Francis, Paul Gottfried and the magazine Chronicles drew on older traditions: the Old Right that opposed the New Deal and entry into the World Wars, Southern agrarianism and Christian traditionalism. Paleoconservatives want strong local and state government, a decentralized federal system, firm limits on immigration and tariffs to protect domestic industry. They oppose wars abroad and nation-building. Compared with Conservatism, it is more nationalist, more protectionist and far less interventionist. Compared with Neoconservatism, it rejects spreading democracy by force. Compared with Reactionarism, it usually works within constitutional, elected government.
