What Brazilian Integralism Stands For

Plínio Salgado launched the Ação Integralista Brasileira (AIB) with his October Manifesto of 1932. It became Brazil's first nationwide mass party, with hundreds of thousands of members, green shirts, the Greek letter sigma as its emblem and the salute Anauê. Integralists called for an integral state built on Christian spiritual values, corporatism and a strong, unified nation, and opposed liberalism, communism and international finance. Gustavo Barroso added an antisemitic line. The AIB supported Vargas's 1937 coup but was dissolved weeks later with every other party, and an armed attack on the presidential palace in 1938 failed. Compared with European fascism, it stressed religion and Brazil's mixed identity. Compared with Varguism, it was a party movement rather than a government.
