What Falangism Stands For
José Antonio Primo de Rivera founded Falange Española in 1933 and merged it with Ramiro Ledesma Ramos's JONS the next year. Its program called for a unified, Catholic Spain, national syndicalism with state-run unions, and the rejection of liberal democracy, Marxism and separatism. José Antonio was executed in a Republican prison in Alicante in 1936. In 1937 Franco fused the Falange with the Carlists into FET y de las JONS, the only legal party. The regime it served carried out mass executions, ran prison and labor camps and banned other parties and free unions; the party was dissolved in 1977. Compared with Italian fascism, Falangism puts Catholicism at its core. Compared with Carlism, it is centralist and not monarchist.
