What Fascism Stands For
Fascism arose in Europe after the First World War. Benito Mussolini founded it in Italy and seized power in 1922; Adolf Hitler's National Socialism took Germany in 1933, and related movements spread across Europe, Latin America and Asia. Fascists rejected liberal democracy, Marxism and individualism, calling for a unified nation under one leader, with corporatist control of the economy rather than full public ownership. In power, fascist regimes abolished free elections and independent unions, imprisoned and killed opponents, and waged wars of conquest; Nazi Germany carried out the Holocaust, the genocide of six million Jews along with Roma and other groups. Compared with Reactionarism, fascism is modern and revolutionary in style. Compared with Authoritarian Capitalism, it is ultranationalist and seeks total control of society.
